Artist Statement
Since my graduation with a Masters of Letters degree from the Glasgow School of Art in 2014, I continue to develop my practice across disciplines and explore the boundaries of painting and sculpture within the expanded field. I make 3D forms to counterpoint 2D works, drawing attention to the notion of liminal space, materiality, value and reproduction.
Earlier this year I staged my first solo show Remote Proximities, an examination of 2d and 3d space. Geometric shapes and mathematics form the basis from which all the elements in the installation derive. The forms act as a metaphor to describe the root of ideas in the interior cognitive world and also reference the materiality those ideas inhabit in the physical world. In their raw form, they present an ideal aesthetic which allows for a sensitive investigation of materiality in both 2D and 3D media. The dialogue and relationship between the different works and media, reference and address the tension and assimilation between 2D and 3D space.
Since making this work I have become more focussed on the fragility, transience and robustness of different materials. The paper forms I make function primarily as maquettes for the larger metal works. However, the delicate nature of the forms activate an ethereal reading of the paper material.
While at Scratch Art Space I am making drawings and paintings that investigate subtle materiality and strong architectural forms. I see a tension in the work that pits a limited palette and economy of line against the activity of perspective and architectural spaces which I am exploring and developing.
