Earth & Flesh is the debut solo exhibition for recent art graduate Virginia Walsh. The work draws on connections between life-experiences and the natural environment, as the artist finds solace in colour and diverse shapes of our surrounds.
Observing and reflecting on the land, Virginia draws out skeletal features of natures, certain vistas mimic bodies like borrowed bones from the earth. In expressing these compound figurative landscapes in her work, aspects of inner emotions are unearthed. The work has an intensity, haunting and uncomfortable, simultaneously capturing the complex beauty seen about. The pieces are intuitive and hold memory-based reflections of the artist’s life – emotions come and go while she paints.
Drawn to the human body and the space it holds, abstract figures invite the viewer in to reflect on their own experiences and interactions within landscapes.
Residing in the Illawarra / Dharawal area, Virginia has shown work in a number of group shows to date including Still life painting prize project Artspace 2023 and Nothing is real(ism) bad news gallery Wollongong 2023
