Sydney Exhibition
Amy Jane Scully
Opens Wednesday 30 August, 6 – 8pm
Runs 31 August – 10 September, 2023
Amy has created over 65 Foundlings – a project started during lockdown as she gathered beach & bush debris on daily walks. Amy found organic and discarded objects and arranged them into figures reflecting her mood and the seasons of change during this strange time. Providing a window to the wild for Amy’s Instagram followers who couldn’t access the beach or bush, two self-published volumes of pictorial books of these images were well received.
Out of lockdowns, the Foundlings continue to appear from found objects further afield. Trips to the South Coast of NSW resulted in Foundlings prints debuting at Art Springs for Wildlife Festival in Berry, then after foraging in Fitzroy, a few returned to be exhibited at Brunswick Street Gallery, Victoria in the New year. These foundlings have a different feel from the ones gathered from Sydney Beaches, they are a little more Gothic.
Playing with scale by enlarging the objects, the detail becomes apparent and the discarded made sacred. A subtle look at what we waste and the beauty of sea and bush finds.
Amy’s Foundlings series has delighted her Instagram followers with a window to whimsical wild things and discarded debris during lockdowns. Self-published Volumes 1 & 2 were well received and Prints of Foundlings made their debut at Art Springs for Wildlife in Berry, NSW 2022 then a few of the more Gothic Foundlings from finds collected in Fitzroy out of lockdown were in a group show at Brunswick St gallery in Victoria.
A gallery work station be set up in the exhibition space for the artist to work & meet visitors to the gallery who would like to create their own foundlings.
