Opens Wednesday 27 April / 6-8pm
Runs 28 April – 8 May 2022
Abby Murray studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Columbia College Chicago. Hate It Here is her first solo exhibition. The works are a personal reflection of body dysmorphia, trauma and grief, conflated with memories of euphoria. Despite the pain the works accentuates the power of unconditional love.
Artist Statement
Steeped in memories, the work is drawn from diary entries and hoarded sketches dating back from 2015 along with current work comprised of figurative and landscape paintings. Some images draw on our incompleteness as humans, our relationship to nature, and the mundane of sitting and waiting while others show utopian lands filled with metaphysical plants. The striking (and at times psychedelic) colour palette emphasises an underlying spiritual ancestry, and a reminder that in the end we really don’t hate anything at all. The series invites the viewer to tell their own story, to find connection and to move forward in this utterly changing and emotional world.
