End of Year Party & Exhibition

A Sonic Meditation begins 6.30pm

Join us for our annual IN House exhibition and end of year party to wrap up the year.  We’ll exhibit a mix of studio & associated artists and we’re very excited to have Sydney musicians Nicole Johnson & Josephine Macken performing their improvised collaboration A SONIC MEDITATION in our Level 1 Venture Space. 

A Sonic Meditation begins at 6.30pm. 

This is our thank you for your support of Scratch Art Space gallery and workshops and the associated support to all artists making their way through a creative career and to celebrate everyone that has exhibited, drawn, modelled, studied, visited, and clowned around with us this year.

A SONIC MEDITATION

Josephine Macken & Nicole Johnson

We’re so pleased to have Josie Macken and Niki Johnson take over our Venture Space for this event. A Sonic Meditation is a musical collaboration where they explore meditation through improvised sound installations.

The improvisation is performed with the intention of creating a meditation in the performers and the listener. The performance also often involves mimicking of each others movements through the instruments so that the music develops in a connected, unified trajectory.

Often the improvisation will develop so that the two performers are playing on the same instruments at the same time, hence the duplication of many of the instruments. This conversation created between the performers creates a meditative and slow development of ideas as the performers move together from each idea too the next.

The metal pipes, kalimbas and bass flute provide multiple harmonic series, the temple bowls provide two tonal centres, and the cymbals and maracas provide colour and texture.
