Narrative Paintings
This exhibition presents the second iteration of Jen Cuthbert’s installation work. The audience is invited to walk through a tangle of creatures, curios and fragments of human intervention, with paintings hanging not against walls but from the ceiling. Oscillating between real and imagined worlds, Cuthbert’s installation proposes that narrative exists not only within a work of art itself, but in the slippery space between viewer and object.
This installation features a series of 30 narrative paintings on organza, arranged in an immersive spatial environment that challenges the conventional view of narrative, using the visual medium to convey a connection between the present and past.
Cuthbert has developed an alternate method of viewing narrative in pictorial art. Rather than viewing an image as a fixed moment in time in a linear narrative, she proposes that we start to view narrative in painting in terms of spatial narrative and as an ever shifting experience.
