With an impressive and enduring list of career achievements, Newcastle-based artist Dino Consalvo presents a his solo show The Colour Of Water this October.
In this series of en plein air paintings of Merewether Beach Consalvo’s his deep exploration of this ever-changing landscape is on show, with a mastery of mood and movement. Grappling with the landscape’s unpredictability, allowing it to challenge and reshape his responses to it, the artist not only connects with the natural surroundings but also seeks solace from the pace of daily life, infusing his on-site paintings with a deliberate sense of ritualistic slowness, palpable in the final compositions. Weaving together the darker, stormy moods of the beach with the comforting blues and warmth of days-end skylines, each piece offers a glimpse into the diverse days spent by this captivating location.

“I work using my accumulated experience, I paint the movement, light, colour and mood of the area I am in. It’s a balanced dance to and from adding to a wave, sculpting the space around a rock or explaining the transparency and movement of the incoming or outgoing tide. Nothing is static…this is not still life. The water is moving, the light is changing and you have to finish before you get washed off the rock.”
Included as a finalist in the Paddington (2017), Gosford (2015, 2016, 2017) and Mosman Art Prizes (2015), Consalvo has previously staged solo shows with Duckrabbit and Janet Clayton galleries (Sydney) along with a host of Newcastle and surrounding spaces.
