Jude Williams

Opening Event . Wednesday 20 November, 6 – 8pm
Runs . 21 November – 1 December, 2024

Presenting new work, artist Jude Williams explores deep intimacy with the humble clothing pile. Viewing the ever–changing clothing piles that sit on her small bedroom cupboard as an extension herself, bearing the artist’s trace. Setting out to capture the deep connection to this everyday object and time, the thick layering tells a story, excavating her memory and her past. Created with carefully threaded tapestry like layers of paint, the final work rests fundamentally on the patient and laborious scrutiny of these piles.

Jude’s practice explores connections between painting, photography and video in the Everyday. Speaking to ideas of image, surface, genres of painting and coming home. Not to home in the nostalgic sense as her practice extends far beyond. She is addressing lived time, present and past, in the everyday as a tapestry-like embodiment. The surfaces are thickly textured, blurring the image and often leaving them forever in perpetual motion and unfinished. The painted layers have become extremely important to me and the final works are transformations.

Embodied viewing can be described as an experience where the viewers perception in front of the painting photograph shifts from being a sole visual one to one where the body of the viewer in all its totality becomes more aware of its own presence in the world’

Jude Williams has been a finalist in the Fisher’s Ghost Award (2023, 2022 & 2021), exhibited with Scratch for her solo shows I’m Only Happy when it Rains (2023) and Paris In Store (2020) and been a finalist in the Mudgee Inaugural Portrait Prize (2022), Paddington Landscape Art Prize (2022), Mosman and Greenway Art Prizes (2020).
