Rachael Helmore
Opens Thu 29 September 2016
Exhibition Runs until Sun 9 October 2016
Gallery hours: Thu – Sun, 12 – 5pm
Rachael Helmore’s exhibition Position Doubtful takes us into Spring. In these works Rachael explores the way we perceive and move through space, charting the elusive nature of landscape, vanishing points and horizon lines. These new works attempt to make sense of place through an active process of looking and mark-making.
By drawing rapidly without looking at the page, Rachael captures traces of the world around her. Observation becomes an embodied experience. Black lines, ink washes and fields of colour map out environments both familiar and unfamiliar. The confined space of the white cube becomes a landscape; long stretches of road are compressed onto sheets of paper.
On the opening night and at selected times throughout the exhibition, Rachael will create a drawing installation within the gallery that explores the direct surrounding environment. Notated directly onto the windows of the gallery, the image will simultaneously become a reflection and an obstruction in viewing the world beyond.
