Kate Riley
Opens Wed 14 October
Runs 15 – 25 October 2020
Kate Riley is a multi-disciplinary artist that works primarily across drawing and sculpture disciplines. Having spent time time working remotely in Arnhem Land with local artists Kate was influenced by the tropical environment and the local creative community.
Many of her drawings exhibit a playfulness of texture and interacting shapes, an influence of the tropical environment in which she worked. Growing up in the small rural community of Dorrigo, NSW, led Kate to focus on these familiar regions in her art practice and career.
Kate is now based in Sydney and is enrolled in her first year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the National Art School.
Artist Statement
From The Edge presents a series of black and white plant-based works. This body of work was created from walking & working in both plein air and studio-based work in the Dorrigo area. The works are pen and ink on watercolour paper. Drawing in this way has been an opportunity for me to explore light and shade and the complex interrelated shapes that make up sub-tropical rainforest. In producing these works I have pushed my technical skills by focusing on a limited subject matter in a small scale.
