This is a follow up course to Painting for Beginners. Painting II takes students to the next step making a close study of a self chosen Master Painting. Because painting is a multi-layered, complicated process it’s of high value to analyse and study a master painting. With this approach the tone and structure of the painting is fairly easy to emulate and then more time can be spent focussing on colour and brushwork which is what we consider the heart and soul of a painting especially when heightened with a solid, logical underlying structure.

Students can select an artist and together we nut out how the painting was constructed, the brushwork and colour mixes. Students can use acrylic and/or oil paint.

Week 1: Preparation / Prepare supports for painting, and begin studies of the chosen work.
Week 2: Layer 1 / Analyse how the first layer of the painting was made with lean, fast drying colour
Week 3: Layer 2 / Figure out the structure of the composition
Week 4: Layer 3 / Figure out the tonal plan
Week 5: Layer 4 / Figure out the colour plan
Week 6: Layer 5 / Tweak you own changes
Week 7: Layer 6 / Refine colour saturation, highlights and shadows
