The themes in Katrina’s works are primarily the environment, politics and religion. She works intuitively with issues and news that have an emotional element of concern for her, to access her subconscious and deeper feelings about the them, how they influence her, and her social environment. The current political situation in the USA is of particular interest to Katrina and she responds to the disturbing emerging sexism by blocking images of the President with strong female Iconic images that many women look toward for positive reinforcement about being female.
Katrina searches and collects imagery from books and newspapers, interfering and intervening the found images with collage, drawing and/or painting.
My practice is to make works that are influenced by my everyday life experiences. Collage suits this way of working as it is easily moved around like a puzzle finding the right spot, mixing and matching images. Using this approach there is no defined plan as the work evolves as a kind of collaboration with thought and action of the artist. In the end the work and the artist needs to be happy with the end result.
These works are visually a new departure for Katrina, they are consistent in her drive to keep her work personal and about her own everyday life experiences, very much drawn from her own world.
